May News
Our weekend cafe is open! Come and have brunch beneath the orange trees. The island's best coffee (Salar Cafe), newspapers, music and art...
Lots of events to interest you this month:
An ENGLISH THEATRE evening with Sandy Phillips (www.smptheatre.com) , who divides her time between Mallorca and Singapore. "A bed and three pillows", for one night only, is on May 6th. We will be offering dinner before the one-act play - book to guarantee a place.
For classical music lovers, another treat:
On Friday evening, May 12th, we present the second of our extraordinary chamber music concerts by the member and friends of the DSO (German Simphony Orchestra of Berlin). The first concert (April 8th) was sold out, so make sure to reserve early (15 €). To secure entrance to the remaining 5 concerts, we have a special subscription price of 60 €. This month we present the Suoni d'Arte quartet, comprised of renowned musicians Franz and Débora Halász (see below), Roeland Gehlen (Violin) and Sophia Reuter (Viola). Don't miss it! Remember we offer free tickets to volunteers who help organise the concert evenings.
The MASTER CLASSES this month are offered by Deborah Halász (piano) and Franz Halász (guitar).
Praised by critics in her debut recordings, the Brazilian Débora Halász in among the leading South American pianists of her generation. Winner of the most important competitions in her native country, she made her debut with the Sao Paulo State Symphony Orchestra at the age of fifteen. Four years later the Critics Prize (APCA) named her the best soloist of the year. Her ambitious recordings include the complete piano music of Heitor Villa-Lobos and the complete works for harpsichord by the Portuguese baroque composer Carlos Seixas.
American-born German Franz Halász stands in the forefront of outstanding artists in the guitar field. Judged by Soundboard Magazine in his New York debut as "simply electrifying!" and by Gramophone's critic as "the most remarkable guitarist in many years", Franz Halász began his career in 1993, winning prizes at the Andrés Segovia Competition in Spain and the Seto Ohashi Competition in Japan.
In his debut CD with Spanish guitar music he was praised by the prestigious critic Coolin Cooper:"For the modern Spanish repertoire, Franz Halász in unsurpassed, able to deliver Turina's message as no one ever has before - no, not even the great Segovia".
Not to be missed this month, an exhibition by a young painter with a lot of talent. Charlotte Conrad's inspiration is Africa, and her surprising, vibrant canvases will fill our gallery from May 19th.
Spring is the time to dance. Dolores Acosta, who teaches our Monday night creative dance class, presents a work in development with fellow dancer Bel Alzamora in our Art Night Dinner series to finish the month.
And finally: don't forget the Jazz Club.
See you all in May. Volunteers needed!
