Sa Taronja News - September 2017

Dear Members and Friends of Sa Taronja:

The Association SA TARONJA is entering a new phase of life!

At the Annual General meeting on July 28th, a new Board of Directors was voted into office:

President:  Iwona Pakula
Vice President:  Laura Trefiletti
Secretary:  Marta Bartolome
Treasurer:  Gracian Gralik
Vocal: Judy Ray

Some of you already know Iwona, who has been managing the activities at Sa Taronja since the beginning of the year, and has held a series of highly-praised creative wokshops for children.  Laura Trefiletti has also been active in the Association as a workshop organiser in circus arts.  Marta Bartomeu is known to many Sa Taronja members for her painting workshops for children and adults and her volunteer work for the Association since its very beginnings. Gracian Gralik, young musician, continues in his post from the last Board.
Iwona and her new team will face a special challenge:  to keep the Association alive and flourishing despite the loss of its traditional home - for, as many of you know by now, the property on the calle Andalucia has been sold.

The centre, Sa Taronja's headquarters for 20 years (yes!! 20 years!),  was immensely expensive to run and Tina's decision to sell it was inevitable, after years of dwindling resources. Sa Taronja never received the necessary institutional support, there were never any serious grants, and the artists’ residence that we hoped would make the place self-financing is currently not legally possible.
So she is very happy that the new owners wish to carry on, are planning a new cultural centre in the property and are open to future collaboration with our Association.
They are making a large investment to bring the centre’s facilites up to scratch, but this means it will be closed for renovations for over a year.

Meanwhile, the Association is looking ahead. It has had a remarkable past and should have an equally remarkable future. The new action plan includes collaboration with artists and other cultural movers and shakers on and off the island. We hope that all for whom culture is important will continue to support Sa Taronja and join forces with us. We are open to your ideas and can always use a helping hand.
A great opportunity arises next month:

On September 16th, after clearing out the finca, the Association will hold a big sale of the items that must go . . .  including an auction of works of art.  There is furniture (mostly chairs and tables) restaurant and bar equipment, kitchen equipment, lamps, paintings, knick-knacks etc . . .   Low prices, fun and a bar.  It’s our last day in our old home and we hope many of you will come.

If you’d like to help in any way - organising and advertising the event, setting up, running the bar, clearing up the next day, etc.
