"Persepolis"
(2007, in English with Spanish subtitles.)
Directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud.

Synopsis: Persepolis is the poignant story of a young girl in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of precocious and outspoken nine year old Marjane that we see a people's hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power - forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless, she outsmarts the "social guardians" and discovers punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden. Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war, the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable.

"The Source”
(La source des Femmes, 2011, in French with subtitles in Spanish.)
Directed by Radu Mihaileanu. FREE.

Synopsis: A comedy-drama set in a small town in Middle East, where the searing heat and the scarcity of resources and technology keep people tied to archaic customs for tasks such as the fetching of water. In fact, their tradition says that it is the women who, under the blazing sun, go to the top of a mountain to haul water from the spring and carry it home. This film’s story, which tackles issues of power and the position of women, shows what happens when Leila, one of the women who fetch water, proposes a sex strike until the men help with the water transport.
