Jazz Lunch in Limon y Chelo

ARMANDO LORENTE vibraphone
percussionist extraordinaire,
and the legendary
TONI CUENCA  double bass

This Sunday we have a very special jazz duo. Armando Lorente is one of the most committed Spanish artists working with percussion instruments today.  Solo-percussionist for the Balearic Symphony Orchestra, he is also a composer, author and professor of percussion at the Palma conservatory. This Sunday he brings his vibraphone, a musical instrument that belongs to the family of the "Laminophones"  invented by Herman Winterhoff in 1916.

Toni Cuenca, whose name is synonymous with the best jazz on the island,  is also an arranger, composer, teacher and orchestra director. The Toni Cuenca / Armando Lorente Duo have been playing together for over 10 years before audiences at home and abroad. Their music ranges from classical through jazz and avant-garde experimentation and contemporary music.

"On this occasion we're presenting what we call MINIMAL RHYTHM JAZZ. It's inspired by the idea of an intimate sound-space, in which rhythm and subtle melodies, through improvisation, create a feeling somewhat different from other musical approaches of the traditional music scene."

Limón y Chelo opens at 1 p.m. - live music from 2 p.m. - FREE ENTRY

Tuesday, October 22nd

CARLOS JAMBRINA
Flamenco guitar

Technique and soul: the guitarist Carlos Jambrina in Sa Taronja

Walking through Palma, you may have already seen and heard Carlos Jambrina, flamenco guitarist extraordinaire, one of the best street musicians in the city.  A striking and unusual man, no stranger to bad fortune, he is a street musician by choice and has made his living at it for many years. Cultivated, multi-lingual, philosophical, a man with style, flair and irony, (and extraordinary resilience) he has chosen his path and stuck to it, dedicating his life to flamenco since the age of 24. Self taught, and with no flamenco roots, he has mastered the many different styles ("palos") in the flamenco repertoire, is knowledgeable about its history and development, its Gypsy and Andalusian roots, the influences of Moorish, African, and Jewish musical styles, and is now a walking flamenco anthology. And what's more, he has that essential ingredient of flamenco, the "duende".
We are very happy he can be persuaded to give up the pavement in front of the Bar Bosch every now and again to come and play at Sa Taronja, where his passion, spirit and great musicianship always go straight to the heart of his listeners. If your life is lacking a little color these days (or if you just want more!) come to Limón y Chelo and warm yourselves at the flame of Carlos' flamenco. To see Carlos Jambrina play, putting all his soul into the music, is to understand at once the meaning of "duende" - the spirit, or rather the sprite of flamenco that enthralled this man and that will captivate you too...

Music from 8:30 p.m.  - Restaurant opens at 7 p.m. - FREE ADMISSION
Chef Mariano Torres of Limón y Chelo will add his own pinch of passion to the meals served up tonight. Dinner a la carte. Reservations: 971 136 368

Saturday, October 26th

SERENATA BERLIN

Chamber music concert in our series SERENATA BERLIN with members and friends of the German Symphony Orchestra ( DSO ) of Berlin.

This will be the last concert of the series in 2013

Musicians:
François Lambret, piano
Kamila Glass, violin
Jacob Spahn, cello

Programme:
Dmitri Shostakowich: Sonata Op. 40 for cello and piano (1934)
Alexander Glazunov: »Chant Du Ménestrel« Op. 71 for cello and piano
Pjotr Tchaikowsky: Piano trio in a Minor Op. 50

We are looking forward to another great chamber music evening on the 26th - the last concert of our chamber music series this year.  We thank the world-class musicians that  Kamila Glass, tireless organiser of the series and violinist of the DSO, has brought to us over the last many years. These great musicians have offered their talent as a donation to Sa Taronja, and we have been treated to the most beautiful and challenging compositions by many great composers in the intimate setting of our humble ex-chicken shed theatre (which has excellent acoustics!).
We are hoping for a big audience on October 26th. An evening of Russian composers, featuring works by Shostakovitch, and Glasunov as well as Tchaikovsky's first and only trio for piano, cello and violin. A romantic and elegaic work of breathtaking lyricism, this is considered one of his most difficult compositions for piano. We are lucky to have the celebrated young pianist and pasionate chamber-music lover François Lambret to play it, along with the talented young cellist Jakob Spahn, and are particularly delighted that Serenata-Berlin organiser Kamila Glass will be with us, on violin.
We thank all our supporters and look forward to seeing you on the 26th.

Note: we are still seeking a sponsor for Serenata Berlin, as well as more members in general. Music lovers will surely agree that it is worth making an effort to preserve this wonderful series and continue offering exceptional classical music in the southwest of Mallorca.
Membership forms can be downloaded at  www.sataronja.com/membership.html

Concert at 9 p.m. in our Sa Taronja theatre
20€ / discounts for Sa Taronja members

Our last JAZZ LUNCH of the season

Dixie Swing Trio

GEOFF FROSELL trombone
MIGUEL ANGEL PERICAS piano

STEVE BERGENDY bass

The trombonist Geoff Frosell, the English gentleman of the jazz scene in Mallorca, stands for solid mainstream jazz. A jazz lunch not only for fans of the old times, but also the large evergreens swing up to the groove of the 60s. At his side, Geoff has the virtuoso bassist Steve Bergendy and the brilliant pianist Miguel Angel Pericas.

Dixieland is a name given to the style of jazz performed by early jazz musicians. It was developed in New Orleans, and is one of the earliest styles of jazz music. The Swing era began in the 30's when big band swing music reached its peak. Both styles saw a sort of a revival in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Limón y Chelo opens at 1 p.m for lunch
Live music starts at 2 p.m.

After October 27th the Limón y Chelo staff take a break.
The restaurant will reopen on November 15th with the winter schedule:
Fridays and Saturday nights 7-11 p.m., and Sunday lunch 1-4 p.m.
Apart from these times, the restaurant is always available for private bookings. Don't forget to reserve early for your Christmas business lunches, birthdays and family reunions.
