STOP! - Vernissage - Friday, January 11

STOP! AN EXHIBITION ON CLIMATE CHANGE, AND WHAT IT MEANS TO MALLORCA

Vernissage: 8 p.m.
8:30 p.m. - Speech by Professor of Geology and Earth Sciences Antonio Rodríguez Perea, University of the Balearic Islands

Everything you ever wanted to know about global warming, and how it will change the face of the world we live in. The exhibition provides a very informative look at the reasons behind - and the possible solutions to - the dramatic change predicted for the world's weather. The focus is on how human activity has contributed to the problem, and what we must do to combat it. It compares Mallorca's "ecological footprint" with that of other countries, explains the Kyoto protocol, and explores some of the creative possibilites of facing a future without fossil fuels. The exhibition touches on transportation, emissions, agriculture, tourism, polar ice caps, population growth, sea levels, weather changes, and the statistics and strategies that are useful in understanding and living with the problem, including clear examples of the importance of each individual's effort.

Over the three months of the exhibition a variety of related events are planned at Sa Taronja:
• Sunday, Feb 3rd: a presentation on the "Slow Food" movement by Guillem Ferrer, followed by a lunch based on ecological products and a concert by Fernando Rubín and Sebastian Moner, on two guitars.
• Weekend of 16-17 February, an "Energies of the future" Fair - from 11:00 to 6 p.m.
• Jan 24, Feb 7 and Feb 21: FILM FORUM: a film on the topic of global warming, followed by a debate with invited guests. 21:00 - soup and bread(3.50€) , 9:00 p.m. Film (free)
• Sunday March 2nd: A day devoted to transport issues, with a bicycle excursion in the Andratx area
- a competion (literary/artistic/scientific)
