WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES IN SA TARONJA

CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS

In September:  INTENSIVE ART COURSES IN SEPTEMBER (Advance enrolment necessary!)

 16 to 20 of September, 2013
Art workshop: "The Pulse of Painting"
with Margaret Hunter

Art Course for residents of Mallorca with international artist Margaret Hunter 16 to 20 Sept 2013

MARGARET HUNTER is running a 5 day drawing and painting course for a maximum of ten people in Andratx, Mallorca from 16 to 20 September 2013, based at Sa Taronja. The cultural association Sa Taronja is where Margaret currently has a studio. It’s a lively and distinctive community and provides an ideal location for this course which will focus on creative awareness and visual thinking.

More generally, the town and port of Andratx retain a genuine Spanish feel linking the sea to the surrounding Tramuntana mountains. This ensures a relaxed environment while simultaneously stimulating the senses with the changing vistas and clear light of the beautiful island of Mallorca.
The course takes advantage of this setting to immerse the participant in the whole experience of a special place. There will be analysis of the subject through initial observational
drawing followed by a range of activities working from still life and the landscape, including spontaneous sketches resulting in a more liberated and energised style. These loosening up exercises are a great way to get quickly into the swing of things, while a visit to Andratx’s colourful market will provide inspiration for quick note-taking sketches.
These initial drawings form the basis of imaginative compositional ideas to be used for a final painting. During the week the expressive effects of composition as well as colour, quality of line, and the importance of tone and contrast will be explored. This ‘step-by-step’ course is designed to engender skills which can unleash the imagination to enable students to make their own distinctive images.

As the week progresses, the group will come together for discussions and at the end of the course Margaret will give each person an individual appraisal to analyse the development and direction of their week’s work so that progress can continue at home. She comments: “in previous courses I’ve led it’s exciting for me to witness and participate in the group dynamic that builds up within such a concentrated period of creative work”.
Experience is an advantage but the course is also suitable for beginners who are open and willing to ‘have a go’! A list of suggested materials will be provided nearer the date.
Margaret speaks fluent German and English but is also confident that she can communicate in Spanish with the help of artistic illustration! -  Andratx town and its port are interesting places which retain an authentic Mallorcan feel. There are therefore only a few small hotels. Course participants should reserve accommodation which meets their needs but options include the Brismar Hotel in the port. Other possibilities can be found on Tripadviser or Margaret may be able to suggest other options including local guest houses.

The course fee of €350 will cover: informal lunches, refreshments and a special get together dinner in Lemón y Chelo, Sa Taronja’s restaurant, to celebrate personal achievement and to mark the end of the course.

CERAMICS WORKSHOP - RAKU
with Ruben Cano Sept 14 - 21 - 28. Optional day: Sept 15 for extra practice making pots

Raku ware is a type of Japanese pottery that is traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony, most often in the form of tea bowls. The workshop at Sa Taronja is directed at all who have an interest in ceramics. No experience is necessary, this course is an initiation into the art of pottery.
We are lucky to have an expert teacher to lead us : Ruben Cano is an award-winning Majorcan ceramicist from Llucmayor who has initiated many into the art. His passion about ceramics is as fresh today as when he first put his hands into the clay, and is communicated by his every action. If you are interested in joining us, please let us know quickly as places are limited. The cost of the course includes all the materials, glazes, equipment and instruction, and will take three Satur- days of long sessions. We welcome students of all ages above 15 years. The main language will be Spanish but we will provide Eng- lish and German translation if necessary.
Cost: 160€ (includes lunch on Saturdays) Three Saturdays: Sept 14, 21, 28 from 11-18h. On Sunday 15th the workshop will be open for those who would like to spend more time making pieces for firing. The last day, September 28, is likely to be a long day and we may start earlier or finish later than the stated times. This workship inaugurates our new Ceremics Studio and we hope to offer further courses throughout the year.
