MEANER PENCIL

“Meaner Pencil uses the cello like another voice and sings like a cello”.  

“Meaner Pencil” is Lenna Pierce, a singing cellist from New York whose style is influenced by blues, post-punk, and romantic opera. She uses her songs to glorify everyday experiences and acts of kindness, but is also willing to face the darkness. (Her latest album, Senza Amanti, was named album of the day by a New York radio station last March).
Lenna’s eerie, ethereal voice is underscored by the melancholy tones of the cello… as her often heartbreaking lyrics describe the daily struggles of life.

The East (2013), directed by Zal Batmanglij.

Former FBI agent Sarah Moss (Brit Marling) is starting a new career at Hiller Brood, an elite private intelligence firm that ruthlessly protects the interests of its A-list corporate clientele. Handpicked for a plum assignment by the company's head honcho, Sharon (Patricia Clarkson), Sarah goes deep undercover to infiltrate The East, an elusive anarchist collective seeking revenge against major corporations guilty of covering up criminal activity. Determined, highly-trained and resourceful, Sarah soon ingratiates herself with the group, overcoming their initial suspicions and joining them on their next action or "jam." But living closely with the intensely committed members of The East, Sarah finds herself torn between her two worlds as she starts to connect with anarchist Benji (Alexander Skarsgård) and the rest of the collective, and awakens to the moral contradictions of her personal life.

"Herbert and the Archduke" 

A film by Arpad Bondy, 43 mins. (1983)
(Original version in German, with Spanish subtitles)

 A film about two unusual men who are known for their long-standing relationship with Majorca. This year the whole island is celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the first: Archduke Ludwig Salvador of Austria and Tuscany, whose name will forever be connected with the north coast of Majorca. He died in 1915. The other is Herbert Schiffl, now over 80, well-known to locals as a man who took his destiny in his hands and moved to the island to start farming in S’Arraco in the seventies - using traditional methods, and living off the land. He has since become famous as a passionate tango dancer. It is Herbert who t

ells the story of the Archduke, in a wonderful film woven together by Arpad Bondy in 1983. It’s a great chance to see S’Arraco – and Herbert – as they were thirty years ago, and some of the properties on the north coast that belonged to the Archduke.  We hope to have Herbert at the screening, as well as the film's director, Arpad Bondy from Berlin.
